Two People in One Hakama

Story

Today is the day that a groom will go to meet his wife’s family for the first time. At the father-in-law’s home, preparations have been made for the visit, and the son-in-law’s arrival is awaited expectantly. Meanwhile, the son-in-law is nervous about going alone, so his father accompanies him to the gate of the father-in-law’s home. The father gets his son to wear formal long hakama trousers and is waiting outside when he is discovered by Tarō Kaja. Now he also has to go and meet his son’s father-in-law. However, they only have one pair of long hakama! Now, how will the father-son duo get out of this sticky situation…? Close

Story

Two daimyo feudal lords, out for a picnic, are waiting by the main road searching for someone to hold their tachi swords. A man on an errand passes by, so they force him to carry them. At first the man reluctantly obeys, but then he suddenly draws the swords and threatens the two daimyo. He takes away their short swords and ceremonial clothes. What will become of the two daimyo who now have to do as the man says…?Close

Stop In Your Tracks

Story

The master wants to show off at a tea contest, and he orders Tarō Kaja to go to his uncle’s house to borrow tea and a tachi sword and a horse. However, the horse Tarō Kaja borrows has a peculiar habit: if someone coughs behind it, it gets violent. It’s better than no horse at all, so he takes it home. The master has been waiting impatiently for Tarō Kaja, and—far from showing appreciation for his hard work—suddenly starts scolding him for being slow. Angry, Tarō Kaja immediately gets behind the horse (which his master has mounted) and coughs...Close

The Folding Fan

Story

A fortunate fellow wants to give a suehirogari (folding fan) to his visitor, and sends Tarō Kaja into the city to buy one. However, Tarō Kaja doesn’t know what a suehirogari is! A man calls out to him, and cleverly tricks Tarō Kaja into firmly believing that a suehirogari is an umbrella. A very happy Tarō Kaja at once heads back home and shows the umbrella to the fortunate fellow...Close

Six Loads of Firewood

Story

The master orders Tarō Kaja to deliver a year-end gift to his uncle who lives in the city on the other side of a mountain: six loads of charcoal and six loads of firewood, as well as top quality barreled sake. Tarō Kaja drives twelve oxen carrying the load among the snowy mountains, and finally reaches the teahouse at the mountain pass. He asks for sake, but unfortunately the teahouse is all out. So, he starts on the sake he was supposed to deliver, drinking together with the shopkeeper and they drink every last drop. Increasingly drunk, Tarō Kaja gets carried away and even gives the tea dealer the six loads of firewood to burn. Then he heads to the uncle’s house, leading the oxen carrying the six loads of charcoal...Close
